The town was founded during the 12th century in several stages: bishop Gebhard von Würzburg consecrated the recently built Michael's church and installed the Michaelis market in 1156. Since the second half of the 12th century, the Heller coins were minted in Hall that were rather inferior yet replaced the better money, becoming a very widespread currency.

A document of 1204 mentions Hall for the first time as a town; since 1280, the immediacy of supremacy remained uncontested that in the years before had been wrestled from the neighbouring Schenk von Limpurg clan. Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian had to intervene into the internal affairs of the town in 1340, and he had to reform the structure of the council, the authoritative committee of the town's politics.

From 1340 to 1512 it would consist now of twelve aristocrats, six middle-class citizens and eight craftsmen. As a result of the Great Discord from 1510 to 1512, the nobility of the town lost its supremacy. Subsequently, the council was dominated by a group of rather bourgeois, increasingly academically educated families that developed into a new upper class.

The Katyń Memorial is a bronze statue created by Polish-American sculptor Andrzej Pitynski in dedication to the victims of Stalin's March 5, 1940 Katyn massacre in which thousands of Polish Army officers and intellectual leaders who had been interned at Kozielsk or imprisoned at Ostashkov and Starobielsk had been killed by the occupying Soviet People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs, or NKVD.

The memorial stands at Exchange Place in Jersey City, New Jersey, United States, near the mouth of the Hudson River.

RIF0001 to Moscow. Shouldn't be suprised if this turns out to be visitor of the year

I love palm fronds.

Unrelated aside.

This weekend is Super Bowl Sunday here in the US.

Go Broncs.

And we're set up for our annual toxic feast of pizza and chicken wings.

My sis in law isn't so interested, but I really enjoy watching it with my brother. He fills me in on all that I don't understand.

So I also love the always illuminating post game interviews with the players as to what they did/didn't do and why they won/lost.

This is the best...... ;-)

Happy Weekend to all.

This week's and possibly this year's best visit goes to Tupolev Tu-154M (RF-85136) belonging to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Although it isn't confirmed but potential visitors to the UN Road Safety Conference held in Stockholm during these days.

Tupolev Tu-154M (RF-85136) arrived as "Romeo India Foxtrot 0001" from Moscow Chkalovsky.

The Bridge of Peace is a stunning architectural marvel gracing downtown Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, spanning over the Mtkvari River.

Stretching across 156 metres, this bridge boasts 1208 integrated LED bulbs that illuminate every evening, showcasing four distinct lighting programs across its canopy every hour, starting 90 minutes before sunset.

Commissioned by the City Hall of Tbilisi, the bridge seamlessly connects Old Tbilisi with the newer district, offering panoramic views of Metekhi Church, the Statue of Tbilisi’s founder Vakhtang Gorgasali, and the iconic Narikala Fortress. On the other side, it offers vistas of Baratashvili Bridge and the Presidential Office.

Officially unveiled on May 6, 2010, the Bridge of Peace was designed by the Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, renowned for his work on prominent structures in Tbilisi, including the buildings of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Presidential Administration. The exquisite lighting design was crafted by French lighting designer Philippe Martinaud. The bridge was transported in sections from Italy via 200 trucks, with the lighting elements assembled on-site during the construction process.

The International Court of Justice has a twofold role.

First, it settles, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States. Such disputes may concern, in particular, land frontiers, maritime boundaries, territorial sovereignty, the non use of force, violation of international humanitarian law, non interference in the internal affairs of States, diplomatic relations, hostage taking, the right of asylum, nationality, guardianship, rights of passage and economic rights.

Second, the ICJ gives advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized United Nations organs and agencies. These opinions can clarify the ways in which such organizations may lawfully function, or strengthen their authority in relation to their member States.

The ICJ consists of 15 judges, all from different countries, who are elected for a period of nine years and can be re-elected. One third of the composition of the Court is renewed every three years. The President of the Court is elected by his peers every three years; the current President is Judge Ronny Abraham from France. The hearings of the ICJ are always public. French and English are the official languages of the Court

One of the most important squares in the city of San Marino is certainly the Piazza della Libertà. Located in a central area, this square is overlooked by some of the most important buildings of the city such as the Palazzo Pubblico, the Parva Domous and the Angeli houses (from the 14th century), while the fourth side is a viewpoint on the magnificent hills of the Republic, one splendid balcony on the Montefeltro.

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

The Parva Domus or Parva Domus Comunis (Small Town House ) is a historic building, already mentioned in documents of 1353 and 1378, is located in the center of the city of San Marino; it overlooks Piazza della Libertà and stands in front of the Palazzo Pubblico seat of the most important institutions of the Republic. For some years it has been the seat of the State Secretariat for Internal Affairs.

This bird used to be in huge numbers many years ago.

I dare say they fueled early New Zealanders during colonisation by Maori and European peoples,

Fact, some still see them as nothing more than a resource to harvest for their own selfish reasons.

Years ago as a young fellow, I was a ranger with the then Wildlife service of internal affairs dept.

While checking on an area at Puketi I came across a person with several Pigeons in a pikau ( Hessian sack split crosswise on one side only to be thrown over a horse ).

I confiscated his illegal bounty plus his shotgun and served him with an infringement notice amidst swearing and threats of violence.

Two weeks later a fellow officer along with a Forestry ranger duplicated the same scenario, with the same person, same situation.

The offender tried to swing past the two men on his horse.

My colleague grabbed the reigns to stop the offender escaping with the result being he had his hand blown off by a shotgun round..

Subsequent police action dealt with the offender, which shows the length people will go to perpetrate what they consider "their" rights.... Yea right, a letter or permit from God perhaps

Jakarta is the biggest city in Indonesia with a role as the capital of Indonesia as well as the government center of Indonesia. Jakarta is also one of the 33 provinces in Indonesia, and therefore governed by a governor who reports to the President of Indonesia through the Internal Affairs Minister.

Due to the multi role as both a province and the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta then given a status of Special Capital Region (Daerah Khusus Ibukota=DKI). DKI Jakarta has five municipalities and administrative regency.

The five municipalities are North Jakarta (Jakarta Utara), East Jakarta (Jakarta Timur), West Jakarta (Jakarta Barat), South Jakarta (Jakarta Selatan), Central Jakarta (Jakarta Pusat), and Thousand Islands Regency (Kepulauan Seribu).

Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs (YU-ICE)

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Den Haag former Ministry of Social Affairs, Herman Hertzberger (slightly cut)

Shown here is the former residence of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The building (1990) was designed by Herman Hertzberger. Its main features are the strong structuralist rhythm formed by its array of connected octagonal office towers.

Herman Hertzberger is one of the main Dutch structuralist architects ( the other notables: Aldo van Eyck and Piet Blom). The structuralist architecture was a critique of post-war design. It was explicitly people orientated, in a more fundamental way then functionalism ever was. It strived to stimulate mutual encounters/interaction and the development patterns of working relations by the design of internal space.

Hertzberger wrote “ ….(it’s about) building an interior space that “achieves a certain equilibrium between a sense of seclusion and a sense of community”,” ……this means fulfilling the conditions that enable you to concentrate on your work while at the same time being aware of the others and what they’re doing”.”In the case of complex buildings, there’s the danger of fragmentation, which would frustrate the initial hope of cooperation, working with shared facilities…..”.

Alas, this frustration albeit in a slightly other and milder form, already happened during the design process. The civil servants all wanted to have visual access to the outside, instead of looking into the building and its diversity of work processes. Hertzberger had to alter the design.

Hertzberger is often criticized for the inelegance of the façades of his buildings because he is more interested in the operation and the interior of the buildings he designs than in the aesthetics of the façade.

In 2016 the Ministery moved to another building and the building was sold to a project developer. One of the conditions was that the buyer should create austere living space for up to to 350 refugees with a temporary residence permit (‘statushouders’) for the first five years. A subsidy from the State was made available for that.

Meeting at CMAC with Civil Affairs and some NGO’s

- UN will meet with NGO’s concerning Internally displaced Person’s (IDP’s). Iraqi refugees have taken over an orphanage. Need to relocate refugees. IDP’s are just showing up at M.P.’s checkpoints and looking for help. They try to move in with the G.I.’s.

There were two Iraqi women present with a little boy. Apparently they were looking for help as well. Before the meeting General Strock was walking by them and he stopped and fished an orange out of his pocket and offered it to the boy. It was a spontaneous gesture and it elicited a big smile from the boy, as he accepted the orange, and from General Strock as he gave it to him. General Strock must have gotten the orange at breakfast this morning and was planning on eating it himself.

“Queen-for-a-day” feel to the meeting. (This was an U.S. daytime TV show from back in the late 1950’3-early 1960’s or so. The premise was a live studio audience and three women “contestants” who told their hard luck stories. The reaction from the audience decided the “winner” who received various items that related to resolving her problem. Even as a kid I remember reacting to this show. Like viewing a car wreck; a morbid curiosity.)

- Black market in arms is prevalent in Baghdad

- “Bad guys” have set up their own checkpoints in the City

- So far, 650 UXO missions have been identified in Baghdad

Franz, the “garbage guy”, (another Corps of Engineers civilian) saw 15-18 cluster bombs at a garbage dumpsite. It is unsure how they got there. A little girl was hurt when one of them exploded. This UXO is “beer can” in size, yellow in color, and affects a football field size area when it explodes. The size and color attract kids who are very curious. Great. Those damn things have no business being used, especially in an urban environment with so many civilians present.

(I saw a destroyed Iraqi tank being picked up in the green zone recently; some of Franz’s good work.)

The de-Baathification process is unsettling. Franz said that the lead Iraqi that he has been working with, a former Iraqi Army Lt. General, came to their last meeting, read a letter of protest about the policy which now prevents him from working with us, and walked out. Now what will he and the others just like him do? They may have been too close to Saddam’s regime, but they know how to get things done. They know the system and people. Now they may have to go over to the dark side.

A raw water pumping station was fixed twice and looted again according to the Civil Affairs folks. General Strock responds,

“Fix it again and have an ambush set up for the looters”.

The other officers, who know General Strock, laugh and one says,

“The General is showing his Ranger training”.

A reference to the Army Ranger patch on General Strock’s uniform designating that accomplishment earlier in his career.

Later someone mentioned that General Strock couldn’t line up a Military Police escort for a drive out to Baghdad City Hall for a meeting. So, the General got in an SUV with his driver, chambered a round in his M-9 pistol and said,

“Let’s go”.

And go they did. It’s only a ten minute ride across the Tigris River, but an armed escort is required.

Weimar (German pronunciation: [ˈvaɪmaʁ]) is a city in Germany mostly known for its cultural heritage. It is located in the Bundesland of Thuringia (German: Thüringen), north of the Thüringer Wald, east of Erfurt, and southwest of Halle and Leipzig. Its current population is approximately 65,000. The oldest record of the city dates from the year 899. Weimar was the capital of the Duchy (after 1815 the Grand Duchy) of Saxe-Weimar (German Sachsen-Weimar). Its cultural heritage icludes the Weimar Classicism of Goethe and Schiller, the Bauhaus as well as the Weimar Republic.

The oldest records about Weimar date back to the year 899. Its name changed over the centuries from „Wimares“ through „Wimari“ to „Wimar“ and finally „Weimar“, In 1410 it received city rights, however the growth of the city was severly affected by the 1424 fires.

In 1552 Weimar became the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar (German Sachsen-Weimar) and remaind so until 1918.

18th and 19th centuries

During the regencies of Anna Amalia (1758-1775) and her son Carl August (1809-1828), Weimar became an important cultural centre of Europe, having been home to such luminaries as Goethe, Schiller, and Herder; and in music the piano virtuosi Hummel (a pupil of Mozart), Liszt and Bach. It has been a site of pilgrimage for the German intelligentsia since Goethe first moved to Weimar in the late 18th century. The tombs of Goethe and Schiller, as well as their archives, may be found in the city. Goethe's Elective Affinities (1809) is set around the city of Weimar.

Weimar Republic

For more details on this topic, see Weimar Republic.

The period in German history from 1919 to 1933 is commonly referred to as the Weimar Republic, as the Republic's constitution was drafted here because the capital, Berlin, with its street rioting after the 1918 German Revolution, was considered too dangerous for the National Assembly to use it as a meeting place.

Weimar was, beside Dessau, the center of the Bauhaus movement. The city houses art galleries, museums and the German national theatre. The Bauhaus University and the Liszt School of Music Weimar attracted many students, specializing in media and design, architecture, civil engineering and music, to Weimar.

Nazi Germany

Buchenwald's main gate, with the slogan Jedem das Seine (literally, "to each his own", but figuratively "everyone gets what he deserves")

In 1937, the Nazis constructed the Buchenwald concentration camp, only eight kilometers from Weimar's city center. The slogan Jedem das Seine (literally "to each his own", but figuratively "everyone gets what he deserves") was placed over the camp's main entrance gate. Between July 1938 and April 1945, some 240,000 people were incarcerated in Buchenwald by the Nazi regime, including 168 Western Allied POWs.[2] The number of deaths at Buchenwald is estimated at 56,545.[3] The Buchenwald concentration camp provided slave labour for local industry (arms industry of Wilhelm-Gustloff-Werk).[4] World War II ended with Nazi Germany's defeat and division into East and West Germany. From 1945 to 1950, the Soviet Union used the occupied Buchenwald concentration camp to imprison defeated Nazis and other Germans. The camp slogan remained Jedem das Seine. On 6 January 1950, the Soviets handed over Buchenwald to the East German Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Ukrainians!

All our defenders!

Today I want to say special words of gratitude. Gratitude to all our people who defend our state, defend independence.

Ukraine held out after a full-scale attack by Russia. Ukraine managed to unite the world around the struggle for freedom. Ukraine managed to liberate a significant part of the territory the Russian troops invaded. Ukraine liberates people from Russian captivity.

And Ukraine managed to change the course of the war so that every occupier, even the most inadequate one, felt that we can win and are moving towards victory.

I am thankful to everyone who fights and works for this! For the sake of our victory.

It is precisely to the fact of Ukrainian strength that the leadership of Russia reacts, changing tactics and trying to draw even more Russian citizens and resources into the war.

Russia's decision on mobilization is a frank admission that their regular army, which has been prepared for decades to take over a foreign country, did not withstand and crumbled. And now, due to mobilization, Russia's war against Ukraine for the majority of Russian citizens is not something on TV or on the Internet, but something that has entered every Russian home.

I’ve held a meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief today. The questions are clear. Frontline. Provision of our military. And new threats created by Russia.

I will note right away: any decisions of the Russian leadership do not change anything for Ukraine. We should care only about our tasks. This is the liberation of our country, the protection of our people and the mobilization of global support for the implementation of our tasks.

Diplomatic mobilization of the entire international community is now taking place.

The circle of those who support us now is not limited to our traditional partners and those who openly supported our state after February 24. Now almost everyone supports us - this is the reaction to new Russian escalation steps.

In particular, the farce with the preparation of sham referenda in the occupied territory demonstrates what happened in 2014 in Crimea and Donbas.

And I am grateful to everyone in the world who supported us. Who clearly condemned another Russian lie.

Grateful to President Biden and all American friends. To President Macron, Chancellor Scholz, the President of Finland and all our Polish brothers, the Baltic states, Mr. Borrell, Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen, Charles Michel, the OSCE and all Europeans from Iceland to Romania, who will never be deceived by Russia again.

I am thankful to Britain for the support! Türkiye! Thank you Canada! Thanks also to all those who now privately express their support for Ukraine.

When Russia declares that it supposedly wants negotiations, but announces mobilization... When Russia knows Ukraine's clear position about the impossibility of a diplomatic process after Russia holds any sham referenda...

Everything is clear to everyone. Russia itself buries the prospect of negotiations with its own hands.

I will explain to the Russians what is happening in Russian.

Protests against mobilization took place in the cities of Russia - albeit not massive, but they took place. And they take place. And this is an indicator. Not only in Moscow and St. Petersburg. We know the real mood in the regions of Russia.

We see that people in Dagestan, in Buryatia, in other national republics and regions of Russia understand that they were simply thrown. Thrown to death.

Why, for example, Dagestanis or anyone else should die in the Kharkiv region or near Donetsk? Because one person in Russia decided so - for all the citizens of Russia. There is no other reason. That’s what he wants.

You are already accomplices in all these crimes, murders and torture of Ukrainians.

Because you were silent. Because you are silent.

And now it's time for you to choose. For men in Russia, this is a choice to die or live, to become a cripple or to preserve health. For women in Russia, the choice is to lose their husbands, sons, grandchildren forever, or still try to protect them from death, from war, from one person.

Just think about the number of people they want to take away!

We know for sure that the conscription letters for 300,000 people were printed and signed in advance, even before this decision on mobilization appeared. Our intelligence has proven it. But the Russian leadership is preparing to take up to a million men into the army - this is the key thing they are now silent about.

We know that they will take everyone indiscriminately. Not only the military in the reserve, but any men. Anyone who will be so intimidated that he will be more afraid of avoiding war than of dying in war.

55 thousand Russian soldiers died in this war in six months. Tens of thousands are wounded and maimed. Want more? No? Then protest. Fight back. Run away. Or surrender to Ukrainian captivity. These are options for you to survive.

Russian mothers! Have no doubt that the children of the top officials of your state will not be sent to the war against Ukraine. Those who make decisions in your country take care of their children. And they do not even bury your children.

And we return ours.

A very important briefing was held today. Head of the Office Yermak, Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Budanov, Head of the Security Service Maliuk, Minister of Internal Affairs Monastyrskyi. They told the details of our operation to release 215 warriors, the details of the exchange. We do everything so that society and the world can see how Ukraine protects people and basic human values.

Once again, I congratulate 215 families and our entire country on the return of the heroes.

I am thankful to everyone who helps Ukraine!

Eternal glory to all who fight for Ukraine!

Glory to our indomitable and brave people!

Glory to Ukraine!

Ukrainians!

Our defenders!

I am sure that you periodically see in the media - Ukrainian and Western - reports on how long this war can last. Some say a few weeks. Others - several years. Some say the war will last until the end of this year. And someone advises to prepare for a permanent confrontation with Russia as long as it exists.

Of course, I also hear different predictions. I have much more information than some media outlets about the intentions and capabilities of the Russian army. About the potential of the Russian economy. About the emotional state of society in Russia. All this must be taken into account before saying how long the war will last. Therefore, we must take into account the effectiveness of instruments of influence on Russia used by Ukraine and our entire anti-war coalition against Russia's aggression.

The success of our military on the battlefield is really significant. Historically significant. But not enough to clean our land from the occupiers yet. We’ll beat them more.

Sanctions against Russia are very significant. Economically painful. But still not enough for the Russian military machine to be left without means of subsistence. We promote stronger, more destructive ones.

So, in fact, it is these two areas that determine how long this war will last.

I always tell all our partners with whom I discuss this issue that the amount of support for Ukraine directly affects the restoration of peace. It literally defines how many more Ukrainians the occupiers will manage to kill.

If someone says: year or years, I answer: you can make the war much shorter. The more and the sooner we get all the weapons we have requested, the stronger our position will be and the sooner peace will come. The more and the sooner we get the financial support we have requested, the sooner there will be peace. The sooner the democratic world recognizes that the oil embargo against Russia and the complete blockade of its banking sector are necessary steps towards peace, the sooner the war will end.

So the number one task is to speed up the restoration of peace.

Our Armed Forces are doing it brilliantly. They are repelling the occupiers' attacks. They are carrying out counterattacks. They have already tormented - in the true sense of the word - Russian conventional aviation so much that they are forced to use strategic long-range aircraft.

I am grateful to each of our defenders for this great work.

Our diplomats must continue their activity in all possible directions, at all possible levels. Both official and unofficial.

The next package of sanctions against Russia must include an abandonment of Russian oil. In general, the democratic world must admit that money for Russian energy resources is in fact money for the destruction of democracy. When these decisions are made, we will all be able to see that peace is approaching.

I held a meeting with government officials today. The key topic is the solution of urgent economic issues that arose during martial law.

It was noted that four-fifths of all Ukrainian enterprises have already returned to work in a safe area. In particular, this applies to heavy industry enterprises. Transport networks are being rebuilt. Good performance is shown in trade and services. And all this is also the fulfillment of the national task of accelerating the restoration of peace.

That is why I am grateful to everyone who keeps jobs, who employs our people, who helps businesses adapt to these difficult conditions and gives Ukraine the necessary economic strength to live.

No matter what, in all cities and communities where there are no occupiers and hostilities, it is necessary to restore the economy to the maximum.

Energy issues and the end of this heating season were discussed. The season was successful in spite of everything. Despite all the predictions, tariffs have not increased. There were no rolling blackouts. Supplies were not disrupted even in wartime. Preparations have also begun for the next heating season. We discussed the purchase of gas, the purchase of coal.

We offer at least for the next 6 months the electricity tariff in the amount of 1 hryvnia 44 kopecks per kilowatt for those who use less than 250 kilowatts. This is 80% of our people.

The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food reported that the sowing campaign has begun and continues in all regions of our country, including Luhansk and Donetsk.

We also talked to government officials today about filling in the questionnaire that Ukraine received from President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. This is a necessary stage in the preparation of our country to become a candidate for EU membership. The work is almost complete, and we will soon provide the answers to the representatives of the European Union.

I held an important meeting today with all the leaders of the state power bloc. Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Chief of the General Staff, Head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Commander of the National Guard, Minister of Internal Affairs, Head of the Security Service of Ukraine. The meeting was also attended by the Head of the President's Office, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and the head of our delegation at the negotiations. The main topic is Mariupol. Details cannot be made public at the moment. But we are doing everything to save our people.

The restoration of normal life in those areas and districts where the occupiers were expelled continues. The amount of work is really huge. 918 settlements of different scales, but equally important for us, for Ukraine, have already been de-occupied.

We carry out demining. We restore the supply of electricity, water and gas. We restore the work of the police, post office, state and local authorities.

Humanitarian headquarters have started working on the territory of 338 liberated settlements. We are resuming the provision of regular and emergency medical care, the work of educational institutions - where it is really possible. In total, on this day, Russian troops have destroyed or damaged 1,018 educational institutions across our country.

Restoration of roads and railways has begun. In particular, from tomorrow the railway connection with Chernihiv and Nizhyn will be restored. Trains are already running between the cities of the Sumy region.

The teams of Ukravtodor and Ukrzaliznytsia work quite efficiently, and I am grateful to them for this speed. For giving people back a sense of normal life, which the occupiers tried to destroy forever.

In the south and east of our country, the situation is still very difficult, far from talking about recovery.

In the occupied districts of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, the Russian military continue to terrorize civilian residents of our country. They are looking for anyone who has ever been associated with the Ukrainian army or government agencies.

The occupiers think that this will somehow make it easier for them to control the territory. But they are wrong. They deceive themselves. The problem of the occupiers is not that they are not accepted by some activists, veterans or journalists. Russia's problem is that the entire Ukrainian people does not accept it and will never accept it again. Russia lost Ukraine forever. Actually, it lost the whole world. It will not be accepted anywhere anymore.

And the cruelty with which Russian troops are trying to conquer the Azov, Donbas, Kharkiv regions, only takes away even the slightest chance of these territories and these people to have any ties with this state at least sometime in the future.

Maybe somewhere in Russia cruelty is respected. But in Ukraine cruelty is despised. And punished. And it is obligatory.

Today I signed decrees on awarding our military. 237 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were awarded state awards, 34 of them posthumously.

The title of Hero of Ukraine was awarded to Colonel Kashchenko Dmytro Valeriyovych, commander of the 58th separate motorized infantry brigade of the Operational Command "North" of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. For the personal example of heroism that inspires comrades in service, for extremely effective combat operations and concrete and very important results for maintaining the positions of our army and expelling the occupiers.

And finally. The important words that hope always wins even under seemingly insurmountable circumstances.

This Saturday, the Jewish community celebrates Passover. Holiday of liberation. Holiday of life. I sincerely wish all those who celebrate in Ukraine and in the world peace, good and the inevitable defeat of any evil that threatens freedom and life on earth.

Chag Pesach Sameach!

I am grateful to all our male defenders! I am grateful to all our female defenders!

Glory to Ukraine!

This camera is a FED , a Leica II copy, made in 1937. And it is strangely linked in various ways to what is happening in the Ukraine right now.

The FED was the first 35mm camera made in the Soviet Union, and it was made in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, in Kharkov; the city that is now fighting for its life against the Russian aggressor.

As you can see there’s a lot of text on the rangefinder housing. It reads (Russian, Cyrillic):

ФЭД Трудкоммуна НКВД - УССР им. Ф.Э. Дзержинского Харьков

Transliteration into Latin characters:

FED Trudkommuna NKVD - USSR im. F.E. Dzerzhinskogo Khar'kov

Translation:

FED Labour commune NKVD - Ukr.SSR named after F.E. Dzerzhinsky Kharkov

What does it mean?

The name FED is derived from the initials of Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky. He was the founder and first leader of the Soviet secret police, or Cheka as it was originally called, and which later became the KGB. Remarkably, he was also president of the Commission for the Improvement of the Life of Children. When he died in 1926, the Ukrainian political police decided to build a children's commune in his honour. The F. E. Dzerzhinsky Labour Commune was officially opened in Kharkov on 29th December 1927. First it produced electric drills but in 1932 the commune decided to make (Soviet) Leicas! In July 1934, the police functions of the Soviet state were transferred to the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs (NKVD). The administration of the Dzerzhinsky Commune was thus also transferred to the NKVD. This change is reflected in the second version of the FED, which appeared in early 1935 and carried the new engraving FED/Trudkommuna/NKVD-USSR/im./F.E.Dzerzhinskogo/ Khar'kov .

Back to Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky.

As the head of the Cheka, he had a key role in the fight against counter-revolutionaries that became known as “The Red Terror”. It began in mid-1918 following an assassination attempt on Lenin. While records are hard to confirm, ten thousands of people were killed by the Cheka during this period. The number of people killed, often arbitrarily, could possibly go up to a million. The Red Terror was a determined campaign that sought to eliminate opposition, political dissent and threats to Bolshevik power.

More than 100 years later former KGB agent Putin imitates this reign of terror in the Russian Federation and, now in Ukraine too; this time not because of threats to Bolshevik power, but simply because of what he sees as threats to Putin power.

Slava Ukraini!

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

The Katyn massacre was a series of mass executions of nearly 22,000 Polish military officers and intelligentsia carried out by the Soviet Union, specifically the NKVD ("People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs", the Soviet secret police) in April and May 1940. Though the killings also occurred in the Kalinin and Kharkiv prisons and elsewhere, the massacre is named after the Katyn Forest, where some of the mass graves were first discovered.

The massacre was initiated in NKVD chief Lavrentiy Beria's proposal to Stalin to execute all captive members of the Polish officer corps, approved by the Soviet Politburo led by Joseph Stalin. Of the total killed, about 8,000 were officers imprisoned during the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland, another 6,000 were police officers, and the remaining 8,000 were Polish intelligentsia the Soviets deemed to be "intelligence agents, gendarmes, landowners, saboteurs, factory owners, lawyers, officials, and priests". The Polish Army officer class was representative of the multi-ethnic Polish state; the murdered included ethnic Poles, Polish Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Polish Jews including the Chief Rabbi of the Polish Army, Baruch Steinberg.

The government of Nazi Germany announced the discovery of mass graves in the Katyn Forest in April 1943. Stalin severed diplomatic relations with the London-based Polish government-in-exile when it asked for an investigation by the International Committee of the Red Cross. The USSR claimed the Nazis had killed the victims, and it continued to deny responsibility for the massacres until 1990, when it officially acknowledged and condemned the killings by the NKVD, as well as the subsequent cover-up by the Soviet government.

An investigation conducted by the office of the Prosecutors General of the Soviet Union (1990–1991) and the Russian Federation (1991–2004) confirmed Soviet responsibility for the massacres, but refused to classify this action as a war crime or as an act of mass murder. The investigation was closed on the grounds the perpetrators were dead, and since the Russian government would not classify the dead as victims of the Great Purge, formal posthumous rehabilitation was deemed inapplicable. In November 2010, the Russian State Duma approved a declaration blaming Stalin and other Soviet officials for ordering the massacre.
